Divine Mercy

Feast of the Divine Mercy

The image of the Divine Mercy originates from a vision that Sister Faustina had on February 22, 1931 . In that vision Christ expressed His desire to have such an image painted and that the words in the signature beneath it be: Jesus, I trust in You.

Jesus told Sister Faustina. “I want this image, which you will paint with a brush, to be solemnly blessed on the fist Sunday after Easter; that Sunday is to be the Feast of Mercy” (49). “I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all the souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. One that day all the divine floodgates through which grace flows are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet” (699). “The Feast of My Mercy has issued forth from My very depths for the consolation of the whole world” (1517 “and is confirmed in the vast depths of My tender mercies” (420).

Preparation for the Feast

The preparation is to be a novena during which the Divine Mercy Chaplet is recited for nine days. The novena begins on Good Friday and ends on the Saturday prior to the Feast of the Divine Mercy.

Divine Mercy Celebration

Blessing and Veneration:

The image is solemnly blessed and given public veneration so that the clergy may tell souls of the great mercy of God. Jesus told Sister Faustina. “I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish. I also promise victory over (its) enemies already here on earth, especially at the hour of death. I Myself will defend it as My own glory” (48).

The image consists of the risen Christ with the hands and feet bearing the marks of the crucifixion. Two rays extend down from His heart; one pale and the other red. In her diary, Sister Faustina writes what Jesus explained to her, “The pale ray stands for the water which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of souls. These two ray issued forth form the very depths of My tender mercy when My agonized Heart was opened by a lance on the Cross” (299).

Prayers:

During the celebration the Divine Mercy Chaplet and the Divine Mercy Litany will be recited. The chaplet was dictated to Sister Faustina by Jesus and He disclosed to her its value as well as the promises He attached to it. The Litany is a prayer of praises selected from Sister Faustina's diary.

Sacraments:

To benefit form the great gifts which the Lord wishes to give all humanity, they must be in the state of grace, having made a good Holy Confession . In addition on that day they should receive Holy Communion .
