Ark of the New Covenant Pilgrimage
April 2008

The Diocese of Peterborough was blessed, yet again, with the opportunity to host the Ark of the New Covenant, symbol for the 49th International Eucharistic Congress, as it made its final pilgrimage from Martyr’s Shrine in Midland, ON to Quebec City, QC.

Pilgrimage of the Ark of the New CovenantThe portageurs accompanying the Ark on its voyage were joined by nearly 20 young people from the Diocese of Peterborough on Saturday, March 29th as they walked the Ark from Manilla to Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Lindsay. Joining in the celebration of the Holy Mass that evening, the portageurs were welcomed into the homes of the parishioners for a good night’s rest.

The following morning the group took part in the Mass celebrated at St. Alphonsus’ Parish, where they shared their experience of the Ark pilgrimage thus far. After talking with numerous parishioners, they set out again to continue on their journey. This time, the Ark was carried to the Cathedral of St. Peter-in-Chains in time to join in the Divine Mercy Sunday celebrations. Eucharistic adoration followed the procession of the Ark, where the monstrance, blessed by Marc Cardinal Ouellete (Primate of Canada), stood atop the Ark for over an hour. After a short reception at Bishop Doyle Hall, the Ark and its crew headed to St. Anne’s Parish for the evening Mass.

On Monday and Tuesday, the Ark traveled to Monseigneur Jamot, St. John and St. Anne’s Elementary Schools. At Monseigneur Jamot, a short, yet beautiful, service was prepared to welcome the Ark and its portageurs. The CORCs then lead through a presentation for the students in Gr. 4-8 at St. John’s and St. Anne’s. The presentation included music, a skit, talks and catechesis about the Ark and the Congress.

Following Tuesday’s presentation, the Ark traveled to Holy Family Academy in Keene, and after a delicious lunch provided by local families, the Ark and the portageurs, along with several CORCs, headed out, yet again, by foot for Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Hastings. The trek of nearly 20 km took just over 4 hours to complete!

It was an amazing experience to be a part of such an open, devoted and enthusiastic group of young people accompanying the Ark on its voyage to the Eucharistic Congress in June. The smiles on the faces of those walking the Ark never faded regardless of weather conditions or exhaustion. The true spirit of evangelization prevailed, and over the course of those many hours together we grew closer to Christ and His mission through prayer, meditation and song.

We pray that as the Ark continues on its travels to Quebec, that this spirit and love for Christ and His Church will only continue to grow more vibrant as we near the days of the Eucharistic Congress, where we will all come together as one Church to celebrate the source and summit of our faith, the Eucharist.
