From January 29th-February 1st 2009, young people from across and beyond the Peterborough Diocese traveled to St. Peter-in-Chains Cathedral to attend the BXVI Retreat. Building on the JPII Retreat experiences of the past, the annual apologetics retreat organized by the diocesan youth office was designed to deepen young people’s understanding of the faith by way of a series of lectures on various topics. The theme of this year’s retreat was Church History focusing on topics such as the Church and women, Papal primacy and infallibility, the Inquisition, and the crusades. This year we were blessed to welcome Mr. Anthony Schratz, director of Ernescliff College in Toronto and an avid church historian, as our guest lecturer. With over 25 years of experience researching and speaking about controversial topics in Church history, Mr. Schratz gave nine deeply enlightening lectures throughout the course of the weekend to the delight of the over 60 participants. We were also blessed to have Fr. Cris Graas, chaplain of Ernescliff College, join us to provide mediations, and homilies as well as hearing confessions. His insight helped to lead us all closer to Christ throughout the weekend as we came together for adoration, the rosary, and the Holy Mass. When reflecting on the experience of this year’s BXVI Retreat, Elsbeth Cossar of St. Paul’s Parish in Norwood said,
Mark Ironside, of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Keene said that, “the lectures have been great! I think it will be really helpful to know about the topics Mr. Schratz spoke on. I’ve been asked a lot about the history of the Catholic Church by my peers and now I have some answers for them.” We can only hope to build on these experiences as we look forward to what BXVI 2010 might bring!
