CORC Retreats

What is CORC?
CORC, short for ‘Catholics On the Road for Christ’, is the official Youth Ministry Team for the Diocese of Peterborough, established in 2005 and still going strong! CORCs seek to live their faith by sharing it with their peers. As such, they are involved with a great many diocesan events, but also run a number of their own initiatives. A CORC constitution has been approved by Bishop De Angelis, giving structure and strength to the group as a diocesan organization and reach youth also in the far-flung reaches of the Diocese of Peterborough, from Courtice to Parry Sound and from Brighton to Powassan.

Who are CORC's?

Generally, CORCs are young people between the ages of 14 and 25 who have a basic understanding of their faith, but wish to learn more and grow in their faith together with other youth. CORCs also have the desire to help their peers grow in the faith or come to know it better by sharing, through talks, discussions and music, their experiences with God and their passion for all the great things the Catholic Church has to offer.

When do the CORC's meet?
Due to the growth of CORCs and geographic considerations we now have CORCs meeting in two locations. CORCs from the northern part of our Diocese meet every Wednesday at St. Dominic Catholic Secondary School in Bracebridge, Ontario. CORCS from the southern and central part of the Diocese meet every Thursday at the VEYO Centre in Peterborough. The meetings are filled with prayer, fellowship, retreat leader training, time to prepare for upcoming events and social. Youth ages 14 to 25 are more than welcome to join us and come and see what CORC is all about.

What do CORCs do?
CORCs have became widely known for their Catholic leadership in assisting with events such as SONfest (Diocese Youth Festival) as volunteers, greeters, part of the organizational team, leading group discussions and making presentations. CORCs also run full and half day retreats for schools and parishes in our Diocese to prepare for the sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation, and First Eucharist. As well the CORCs offer a Grade 8 retreat for students about to enter high school that focuses on peer pressures, continuing in our faith and strengthening a personal relationship with God in order to be better equipped for the challenges ahead in our secular society. On Good Friday CORCs participate in the Youth Office's ‘Way of the Cross’ through downtown Peterborough, where they take on roles acting, reading, singing and organizational positions to re-enacting the passion and death Christ endured for us. CORCs also participate in ‘Morning Watch’, an all-night adoration initiative by the Youth Office, where they help lead reflections as well as music ministry. In addition, CORCs have shared witness talks at local Catholic high schools, assisted with the ‘Rock the Flock’ tour with Christian rock band ‘Hello Kelly’, visited various parishes of the Diocese promoting Youth Office initiatives and inviting local youth to join them. CORC’s are continually learning and participating in events to help them grow in service as young leaders. These events are local as well as outside our Diocese such as March for Life on Parliament Hill, Lift Jesus Higher Rally in Toronto, Massive Worship Catholic Music Ministry Conference in Ottawa, VEYO’s apologetic lecture series at BXVI Retreat (previously titled the JP II Retreat), etc.

CORC Music Ministry and Drama
One of the greatest ways of interacting with youth and making connections is music. Second to that is drama. CORCs try to incorporate music into every event they facilitate or assist with. As such, CORCs are trying to perfect their own music for the purposes of worship. CORC’s use music during Holy Mass, for praise and worship, at Morning Watches, at Diocese events such as SONfest and during retreats. It is not necessary to be a gifted musician to be a CORC. As CORCs it is more important to participate with a joy that will encourage others to participate in singing at Holy Mass, school, adoration and other events where we pray in song. (The CORCs have a licensed agreement to use selected music from CCLI.) Skits and presentations are also incorporated in retreats and youth festivals such as SONfest. We have been blessed with many music and drama teams in CORC over the years.
