CATHOLIC YOUTH CANOE WITH CROSS FOR SONfest’10
Youth Paddle from Peterborough to Lakefield August 7, 2010

(PETERBOROUGH, ON) The Youth Office of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Peterborough announced today that on Saturday, August 7 a group of Catholic youth will canoe with the Diocesan Youth Cross from Peterborough to Lakefield,  in preparation for SONfest’10, which will be held from August 14 to 15.

Departing from the Peterborough Lift Locks (Lock 21 on the Trent-Severn Waterway) on Saturday, August 7, at 9 am the young people will arrive by canoe at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Lakefield for the 7:00pm parish Mass. The event, scheduled a week before the Diocesan Youth Festival, SONfest’10, is an opportunity for young Catholics to promote SONfest’10 and to act as ambassadors for the Catholic Faith. Catholic Missionaries, such as the Jesuit Fathers, travelled by canoe with First Nation Peoples to spread the Catholic Faith.

SONfest is a popular event that takes place in a different part of the Diocese of Peterborough every year, drawing youth and young adults ages 14-30 from across Ontario and beyond. Modeled on World Youth Day, this event reflect the World Youth Day experiences with exciting guest speakers, fun activities, live music, camping prayer (including Mass and Eucharistic Adoration), and fellowship.

SONfest is an initiative of the Youth Office – part of VEYO (the Vocations, Evangelization and Youth Office) – of the Diocese of Peterborough and its many volunteers. Parishes, community groups and individuals in Lakefield and the surrounding area have been working hard to prepare for it.

SONfest’10 begins Saturday morning at 9am at St. Paul’s Elementary School (2 Grant Ave., Lakefield) with registration, music and introductory activities. The event will conclude on Sunday following Holy Mass, which will begin at 2pm and be celebrated by His Excellency, Bishop Nicola De Angelis.
