Peterborough ON – On Good Friday April 10th, 2009, the youth of the diocese of Peterborough will be out on the streets yet again as they perform an outdoor re-enactment of the Way of the Cross. The 5th annual, 14 station event organized by the Catholic Youth Office is a unique opportunity and experience for those young and old.

The Way of the Cross will begin with a prayer service at St. Peter-in-Chains Cathedral located on the corner of Hunter and Reid Street at 10am. Following this service the procession will travel west across Hunter Street entering East City to Rogers Street where it will end in front of Immaculate Conception Church.  At each intersection the procession will stop for a station with the last four stations being observed on the steps of Immaculate Conception Church. With the assistance of many volunteers and the escort of City Police the procession is expected to run again as smoothly as in 2005 and 2006.

Last year over 50 youth and young adults participated as actors in the event and over 800 onlookers packed into the Cathedral of St. Peter-in-Chains to watch the re-enactment. Cold temperatures forced a portion of the production inside the Cathedral, but not wanting to disappoint the youth took to the streets for the remaining 10 stations.

The script for the Stations was written by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI in 2005 while he was Cardinal and Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

“The Way of the Cross has become annual event in the City of Peterborough and as we prepare for the 5th re-enactment I can only thank God for the wonderful witnesses He has given us in the young people who participate year after year” states Fr. Norbert Glasmacher, Director of the Vocations, Evangelization and Youth Office. “They’re amazing theses young people. One-by-one they have a lesson of discipleship,” praises Bishop Nicola De Angelis.

The public is asked to join the young people this Good Friday, April 10th to commemorate the Passion of Our Lord in a new way.
