Mass on the Drumlin

On September 10th we, members of the Catholic Council of Trent, held our first Mass of the academic year on the scenic Lady Eaton College Drumlin.  We were pleased that a large group of people were in attendance.  We processed up the drumlin carrying the Diocese’s Youth Cross, a walk made more scenic, albeit much longer, by accidentally taking the wrong trail that led us around the drumlin. We’re sure Father Norbert was thinking, as he occasionally says, that this was penance.  When we reached our destination overlooking the Trent campus, Mass was celebrated by Father Norbert.  This was followed by a social in Lady Eaton College.

CCT Retreat

The second annual Catholic Council of Trent retreat was held from September15-17th.  We were blessed to be able to hold our retreat at Mary Helen and David Moes’ cottage on the picturesque Long Lake.  It was nice to get away from the noise and busyness of everyday life.  The retreat included amazing food, campfires, a canoe trip into nearby lakes, stargazing, theological discussion, Rosary, and Mass on Saturday evening celebrated by Father Norbert.  We would like to thank Mary Helen and David for their generosity in hosting our event.

Trent Muslim Student Association and Catholic Council Dialogue

Inspired by the controversy sparked by Pope Benedict XVI’s lecture at the University of Regensburg, the Catholic Council of Trent held a dialogue with the TMSA on October 3rd.  The evening began with a delicious dinner provided by the Muslim association, as they were celebrating Ramadan.  Following the meal, formal discussion began, moderated by Hammam Al Makadma.  It was a productive discussion which led to a greater understanding of both faiths. As was the intention of the event, we conversed about the controversial remarks of the Holy Father, the response that ensued, the state of Catholic-Muslim relations and clarified misconceptions about our faiths. We look forward to collaborating with the TMSA in the future.

Michael Coren Lecture

For the purpose of initiating discussion, the Catholic Council of Trent hosted a lecture on October 11th, by well-known Catholic journalist Michael Coren, entitled Mere Catholicism. About one hundred people showed up, including Trent students and faculty, and people from the wider community, including Bishop Nicola De Angelis. The talk was about the truth of the Catholic Church and her teachings, including her foundation, the Sacraments, and Catholic morality and politics. After an hour of the lecture, there was a social with snacks, followed by a question-and-answer session. The latter proved to be very informative, with a variety of questions asked of Mr. Coren. In fact, we went over our time due to the number of questions and degree of interest!

The Inquisition: Trent Radio Show, 92.7 FM

Every other Monday evening from 9:00 – 10:00 pm, CCT members Eric Mason, Paul Jones and Shaun Retallick co-host a show on Trent Radio, 92.7 FM called The Inquisition. On the show, a variety of issues are discussed from a Catholic perspective. Typically beginning with a guest interview and discussion, there is time set-aside afterward for comments or questions from you, our listeners. Examples of our past shows include an interview with Fr. Stan Chu Ilo on his book The Face of Africa: Looking beyond the Shadows, and a discussion with Dr. David Beresford on Holiday Commercialism. We plan on continuing to discuss issues from a Catholic perspective in the coming months, and hope that you’ll listen in and let us know what you think!
