World Youth Day: Sydney 2008

The Diocese of Peterborough has finalized plans for two trips to attend World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia in 2008 and is happy to offer the following itineraries.

Much like our WYD pilgrimages to Cologne in 2005 the Diocese will offer two trips, one shorter, one longer. The shorter one will go directly to Sydney for the two weeks of World Youth Day: Days in the Diocese (July 11th – 14th, 2008) in Maitland-Newcastle Diocese and WYD festivities (July 15th – 21st, 2008) in Sydney and then return home.  The extended version of the trip will stop first in Seoul, South Korea and visit the homeland of the large Korean community in our Diocese. Father Mark Lee, Pastor of Korean Martyrs’ Parish in Brighton, and his Bishop in South Korea are welcoming us to their home. The trip will continue to Australia for WYD as outlined above and add four days in Brisbane near the Great Barrier Reef before returning home.

As you will see on the itineraries below, final total costs, which have been carefully calculated by our professional travel agent, are not yet definite, since accommodations in Sydney itself might vary depending on what can be confirmed over the next few months. Ideally, we shall have accommodations with families throughout our travels. The figure of total costs shows the upper limit and does already include allowance for alternate accommodations as well as WYD registration, Australian visa and bus transfers. It is our hope that final costs will be lower.  

In any event, costs will be substantial and anyone going will likely have to start saving and fundraising now. Our travel agency has been most helpful and efficient and is trying to offer its own fundraising incentives so that youth from across the Diocese can attend WYD Sydney.
